Yes, they are low tension. I've seen folks choke the mixer but it's not really necessary.

Open the needle valve 1/2 a turn and crank the flywheels a few times. If all is correct the engine should start right up. You can also tap on the bottom of the check valve (make sure it's clean and free) about 30 times with the plastic handle of a screwdriver - that will rattle the check valve just enough to let fuel in the mixer for easier starting.
And if you just don't want to crank that much give her a shot of starting fluid.Jim in Indiana. Edwin,I don't see the bracket for a mag on your engine, I wouldn't spend the money because you can run it on battery and coil, that was a factory option anyway. To fit a magneto you would have to buy a mag bracket, mag, mag gear, and the mag driving gear, nothing cheap in that picture. There is nothing wrong using battery and coil. I included a link to Keith Smiggle's Associated site, there is a lot of information there, you should be able to approximate the year of your engine and the probable ignition setup that came with it, but you will need your Serial number to figure it out.

Hope it helps. Hi Edwin, Make sure the ignitor stays apart after the timed release, if the ignitor spring is loose/ not wound tight enough it can drift back together.
I have a 1 3/4 air cooled and a water cooled. The air cooled is a great runner. I removed the ignitor to use as a pattern to make one for the water cooled and didn't get the spring tight enough. I spent the next show and a half cranking and talking to it. Finally someone noticed the points closeing between strikes and once the spring was taken up a turn it ran like a watch.Good luck! Hello all you Associated Chore Boy folks - I just got one of these lovely air cooled engines and it runs quite well on its old low tension magneto.
Two things I need to do are to re-magnetize the magnets and find a fan since it is missing. I have looked extensively on the web with no luck so I plan to make one.
Would one of you be kind enough to take a good picture of the fan and add some dimensions like the outside diameter, the width of the shroud and the diameter of the hub. Is the bearing a sleeve bearing or a ball bearing? Thanks very much for your help. Bob Price 518.895.8954.
